The Versatile Cutting Board: 6 Surprising Uses

Wood cutting boards are great for slicing and dicing, but their usefulness doesn’t stop there. They are essential in every kitchen, handling tasks you might not have thought of.

Crafters love old cutting boards because they adaptable for a wide range of designs and uses. From clocks to tables, these boards make attractive, useful D-I-Y projects.

Here is a look at six unexpected ways to put your wooden cutting boards to work.

IN THE KITCHEN

#1. Trivet

Cutting boards make natural trivets. The wood is thick and stable. It prevents burns and scorch marks to your counters or tables. Be sure to keep them out of the oven because they aren’t made as roasting planks. For safety, don’t put them on hot burners.

#2. Serving Platter

The rustic look of a wood cutting board adds interest to your cheese board or charcuterie board. And the surface is stable enough to make cutting easy for your guests.

#3. Cake Plate

Whatever size cake you bake, a cutting board is a great way to carry it and present it to your guests. The surface is solid and the board is strong so you don’t have to worry about dropping it. Choose one that is larger than the cake to make cutting easy. They work well for gingerbread houses.

CRAFTS WITH CUTTING BOARDS

#4. Hang It!

Use an old board as a hanging table outdoors. Drill holes in each corner, thread cord through and hang it up as a side table on the patio or porch.

#5. Never Lose Your Keys

Screw hooks into an old cutting board. Use them to keep track of your keys. Hang the cutting board by the door in your kitchen so the keys are always at hand.

#6. Tell Time

Buy an inexpensive clock kit at the craft store. Make a clock out of a small cutting board. This works especially well with an interesting shape, like a state or the moose board Wholesale Cutting Boards features.

Buy Wholesale and Save

Wood cutting boards can be used for a variety of tasks around the home. That’s why everyone appreciates a big or small cutting board as a gift. Keep them on hand for corporate rewards, employee anniversary gifts, customer incentives, club recognition prizes or wedding favors.

Cutting boards can be laser engraved with your company name and logo. This extends your marketing reach to everyone who sees it. It is a much-appreciated and cost-effective way to gain brand recognition.

When you buy wholesale cutting boards in lots of 25 or more, you reap significant savings. It’s also a good way to ensure that you never run out.

your knives. It’s even better if it adds to the attractiveness of your kitchen décor.

Here is a closer look at four things to look for when selecting the best cutting board for your needs.

Wood, Not Plastic

The two most popular choices for cutting board materials are wood and plastic. For experienced cooks, there is no question that wood is the better choice.

Plastic develops nicks and scratches that harbor bacteria and other toxins. According to scientific studies, even a trip through the dishwasher can’t thoroughly sanitize it.

Wood cutting boards, on the other hand, has natural properties that prevent the growth of bacteria. It is simple to keep clean and sanitary. Just wash in gentle soap and water to get off debris and food waste.

Then use an anti-bacteria spray or a mix of bleach and water. Let that sit on the board for 10 minutes, then rinse and air dry the board. That’s all that it needs to stay safe for food preparation.

Use the Right Size

Carving a roast on a tiny cutting board is not just inefficient, it can be dangerous too. The small surface doesn’t allow for enough maneuverability for the food and the knife.

Buy a small board for produce and cheese. Get a bigger one that can safely handle roasts, chickens and other large size cutting jobs. It will help keep you safe from cuts and stop the mess from staining your counter.

An Artistic Touch

The right cutting board adds an artistic note to your kitchen. Wood boards come in a wide range of styles, sizes and shapes. The different types of wood, especially cherry, walnut and maple, have different shadings and textures.

You can show off your boards by hanging them on the wall in your kitchen or resting them against the backboard on your counter. This also lets them safely air dry.

Good for Knives

Wood cutting boards are easy on your knives because they are able to partially self-heal from the many cuts to the surface from regular slicing and dicing. This even surface keeps the edge of a knife sharper for a longer period. Wood also has a certain amount of give, which makes it a softer surface.

Plastic doesn’t have this give or the ability to self-heal. In fact, it develops tiny crevices on the surface from the beginning. Over time they get more numerous and deeper. These catch on the edge of the knife, causing it to develop tiny nicks that dull its edge.

Cost-Effective Cutting

Wood cutting boards last for decades. With simple cleaning after each use, they will stay in good working condition for a lifetime. And their good looks last and last.

Save Money—Buy Wholesale

Never run out of wood cutting boards. Buy them in lots of 25 or more from Wholesale Cutting Boards for a major cost savings per board.

Wood cutting boards are well received as corporate gifts, employee appreciation awards, customer incentives, door prizes, club gifts and wedding favors. They are durable, practical and attractive, and recipients love them.

You can promote your branding with wholesale wood cutting boards made in the USA by having them laser engraved with your logo and company name. If you need a custom size, shape or design, work with our team of experts to produce the board you need.

The news each week has worrisome stories about destruction of forests and habitats, the effect on people living around these forests and the overall impact on life on Planet Earth. Your cutting board shouldn’t add to the problem.

When you buy from Wholesale Cutting Boards, you never need to worry. The maple and cherry wood used comes from sustainable, renewable resources.

Here is a look at what makes these cutting boards environmentally friendly.

Wood Leftovers

Home woodworkers have been making cutting boards from wood leftovers for decades. The process takes time and skill, as well as the right tools and a lot of patience. The end result is an attractive, useful cutting board that lasts for years.

Wholesale Cutting Boards has streamlined the use of wood scraps. They use pieces that many shops simply toss, which means they end up in the landfill. The craftspeople know how to fit together mismatched pieces and turn them into practical, decorative cutting boards that are an asset in any kitchen.

Sustainable and Renewable

Why are some hardwoods considered eco-friendly and others not? The two reasons are how fast they grow and how long they last. Both cherry and maple score high in both areas.

Relatively speaking, cherry and maple have short growing seasons for hardwoods. For example, walnut and oak take many more years to grow.

In addition, maple and cherry cutting boards provide a useful cutting surface for decades. Because these woods have a right grain, small pores and high density, they can take a pounding for decades and still be useful around the kitchen. Just look at the hardwood floors in many historic homes to see how beautiful and durable they are.

Two international groups have provided guidelines for sustainable and renewable resources, the Convention on International Trade of Endangered Species and the International Union for Conservation of Nature. They both feel that cherry and maple are environmentally friendly.

Wholesale Cutting Boards

Wholesale Cutting Boards provides them in lots of 25 or more. These are perfect for corporate giveaways as promotional items, door prizes, employee incentives, sales incentives and wedding favors.

Wholesale Cutting Boards offers competitive pricing, laser engraving and custom design work. Email for more information and a free, no-obligation quote.

Ask any cook and she’ll tell you the two workhorses in the kitchen are her knives and her cutting boards. Experienced cooks have come up with tried and true ways to get the most out of both. Tips for how to treat knives get a lot of attention. But you need to round those out by following best practices for your cutting board too.

Here are five tips that will help you get the most out of your kitchen cutting board.

#1. Avoid slipping and sliding.

Accidents in the kitchen account for over 300,000 trips to the hospital emergency room every year. Most of them are the direct result of knife injuries. You can reduce your risk by cutting on a stable surface.

Put a damp towel beneath your cutting board to stop it from moving around while you slice and dice. This adds extra traction on your countertop or table.

#2. Use the right size and shape for the job.

A small cutting surface is fine for cutting a lemon or mincing garlic. But it won’t work if you are trying to do an expert job of carving a roast or slicing a watermelon. You need plenty of room if you want to do an effective job of cutting.

Don’t use oddly shaped boards for big cutting jobs. A cutting board shaped like a moose or a rooster is a great conversation starter. It works fine for cutting cheese or preparing a garnish. And it’s an attractive addition to your kitchen’s décor. However, it is not the best cutting board for slicing an onion with precision or doing a good job cutting up a roast chicken.

#3. Use wood.

Plastic is hard to clean effectively and bamboo is hard on knife edges. Glass, stone and ceramic will leave nicks on your favorite knife and dull the blade quickly.

Wood makes the best cutting boards. The material gives as you cut, making it kind to knife blades. Wood has natural properties that kill bacteria and prevent it from growing. Wood provides a very stable platform for cutting.

#4. Clean it right.

Rinse a board right after using it. This helps to get rid of bacteria clinging to the surface and reduces the chance of staining.

Disinfect it with a solution of 3% hydrogen peroxide or a mix of two cups of water and one tablespoon of chlorine bleach. Spray or pour over the board, let it sit for 10 minutes and then rinse clean.

#5. Keep it looking nice.

Wood is porous and soaks up liquid. This means your cutting board can get stained. But you can get rid of them using baking soda or coarse salt.

Sprinkle baking soda right out of the box, or coarse salt out of the bag, onto the board. Scrub it gently with a brush or a wet sponge. You might need to do this several times if the stain is set.

Use these tips to stay safe in the kitchen and to keep your knives and boards in good working condition for years.

You’d probably guess plastic as the most sanitary material. In fact, that is often how it is marketed, with emphasis on the ease of cleaning it in the dishwasher. But it’s actually the most difficult to get clean and free of bacteria.

A study done at the University of Michigan showed that bacteria lingered on plastic, much more so than wood. And because it scratches so easily, it is hard to get thoroughly clean even using the dishwasher.

Hardwoods like maple and cherry have a close-grain which prevents the buildup of bacteria. Though the Michigan study showed that bacteria were found in the wood after use, the contaminants did not multiple and gradually died off. Bamboo is also quite sanitary, though specific studies have not been done on them.

The Most Environmentally Friendly

In the environmental stakes, plastic comes in last, and bamboo and hardwoods are neck in neck for first place.

Bamboo is a hard grass that grows quickly, without the use of chemicals. This makes it eco-friendly and sustainable. Watch out for some boards that are made with formaldehyde glues, which add nothing healthy to your food.

Maple and cherry grow relatively quickly for hardwoods, so they are a renewable resource, considered a sustainable material and an ecologically sound choice. Many cutting boards are made from wood scraps, which otherwise would be tossed.

The Most Kitchen Friendly

Plastic is a surface that is hard on your knives. It also tends to scar easily, which means some of those shreds of plastic are getting into your food.

Bamboo is almost 20% harder than maple cutting boards. That means its surface is hard on your knife. The boards naturally have small grooves, which catch the edge of the knife. This slows down attempts at quick chopping.

Maple and cherry boards self-heal from all but the deepest knife cuts. This keeps the surface gentle on knife edges. When you use maple or cherry as your cutting surface, your knives will last longer. Hardwood cutting boards are heavy enough to provide a stable surface for safe cutting.

The Conclusion

Maple and Cherry are standouts when it comes to the environment, health and easy cutting.

When you buy a wood cutting board, you have a kitchen tool that will last a lifetime. It is attractive enough to hang up and display. It is versatile and you can use both sides. It works as well as a serving tray, especially for cheese, as it does for cutting.
